Always use security software with firewall and antivirus protection to help protect your data when filing your taxes this season. Make sure your security software is always turned on and that it’s still updating. If you are thinking of donating, giving away, or getting rid of a computer, make sure to use a data wipe program or to remove the hard drive and have it professionally destroyed. This will ensure that no one can recover your hard drive data. Encrypt sensitive files such as tax records on the computer and always use strong passwords.

Don’t Get Caught in a Phishing Scheme

Learn to recognize and avoid phishing emails. Phishing emails are fraudulent emails where the sender acts as a legitimate organization – such as the IRS, bank, or governmental organizations. Always be suspicious of these types of emails. Do not click links and attachments to suspicious emails you do not recognize. The IRS NEVER asks for personal or financial information via email; neither do legitimate companies. They also won’t call you if you owe taxes. Instead, they will send you a letter. So be wary of sharing information through the phone or mail. Unless you’ve initiated the contact, or you know the person you are talking to well, it’s better to just say no.

Protect your personal data.

Shred bank and tax documents. Think like a thief and be aware that your tax documents, receipts and bank statements are potential trap doors that allow thieves into your personal life. Reduce credit card solicitation. Even if you might not be interested, a thief might. They could plan to get a credit card by your name as a first step to getting your SSN. Treat junk mail with caution. Consider joining an opt out list for junk mail and telemarketers.

What to do if your information is breached

It’s important to safeguard your information and check for fraud. If you receive notice of a breach, it’s important to check what has been taken right away. Do not delay. Stay close to the affected company and find out what they are doing to protect you. Contact one of the three bureaus and place a “fraud alert” on your record.
